She was raised Candor, but transferred to Dauntless in the same year as Tris. Her Erudite tendencies get her through the alien world that she finds herself in: her attention to detail, careful planning, and never straying from rational thinking.
She leaves the city with Tris and Tobias in order to do this latter task. She believes in reinstating the faction system as well as in finding out what is outside the city limits. She is known as one of the leaders of the Allegiant. His and Tris’s relationship is tense throughout the story, as she cannot forgive him for sitting by and watching her be brought to what was supposed to be her execution. Tris’s brother, who chose to transfer from Abnegation to Erudite, where he became Jeanine Matthew’s lackey when the Erudite controlled the city and were murdering the Divergent. He is a GP, so this is forbidden, as any inhibitor to procreation would be unacceptable. He is secretly homosexual and is in a secret relationship with a fellow escapee of the city – George Wu.
He and Tobias seem to have a pretty strong and unique bond. The fourth story, “The Traitor,” runs parallel with the events of Divergent, giving readers a glimpse into the decisions of loyalty-and love-that Tobias makes in the weeks after he meets Tris Prior.He is Tobias’s initiation instructor, whose death was faked in the city so that he could escape before he was killed for being Divergent. The first three pieces in this volume-”The Transfer,” “The Initiate,” and “The Son”-follow Tobias’s transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless, his Dauntless initiation, and the first clues that a foul plan is brewing in the leadership of two factions. When read together, these long narrative pieces illuminate the defining moments in Tobias’s life. Readers will find more of this charismatic character’s backstory told from his own perspective in Four: A Divergent Collection. His voice is an integral part of Allegiant. Readers first encountered Tobias as “Four” in Divergent.
